Interior Details

Our projects typically require appropriate use of materials and textures to preserve the beauty and character of the antique building that house them. We pay great attention to the choice of flooring, the fitting of custom doors, and we often also create custom furnishings and millwork to accomplish an overall unity of texture and scale.

On this page you can see examples of this work, and see how it blends with the special character of each project, yet also is as functional as any more modern counterpart. In some cases new is mixed with old by preference. Its a very individual decision that we are able to assist from our long experience.

Doors and Floors

We create the barn style doors for our projects ourselves using primarily reclaimed and original barn materials, or by painting them to blend with total architectural objective. We often mix these doors with custom fabricated glazed French doors to open the space to light. We use hand wrought reproduction or recycled antique hardware to fit the period of the original building.

When appropriate we will use highly select new flooring materials for living areas that blend well with older materials, but when possible we prefer the adaptation of reclaimed woods to make floors that have character and color that can’t be reproduced by any other method.

Furnishings

We build tables, cabinetry, and other furnishings to complement the antique character of your barn home from wood with naturally aged color and wear. Our cabinetry is often designed to appear much like the fittings and special purpose structures that are part of the original barn.

These materials generally must be selected rather than reproduced as in most cases it is only age and wear that creates this quality of surface and texture, and therefore the craft involved to create these furnishings involves great care to both find appropriate materials and to use them well to make lasting, functional, work.

Additionally the use of these materials gives them a second life and saves the use of new wood. This is an important consideration as this approach is consistent with Green building standards.

Stairs and Railings

Stairs and Railings are very important functionally and architecturally in an open space. We use reclaimed wood to build staircases that blend right in with the barn frame, and are as beautiful and tactile as they are functional. Railings and spindles are typically finished with the same hand tools that were used in the period when the frame was constructed.

Iron stairs are also appropriate and space saving for access to lofts, and we find mixing some new and old materials actually helps to preserve the experience of the open space. Again it is often a very individual choice.

Barn frames often come with fittings such as ladders, wagon or rope hoists, and we preserve these details and work with them.
